The Spirit Master's Crutch

The philosophy of life among the Hmong people, which forms the core of their profound cultural heritage, provides a deep understanding of their worldview, outlook on life, and value system. This philosophy originates from the Hmong people’s unique perception of the world and is shaped by their long-standing practices and reflections. Over time, they have developed a distinctive understanding of the laws governing the world’s operation. Since the Hmong people do not have a written language, their wisdom and knowledge are passed down orally and through personal experience, which makes their culture more closely connected to nature and imbued with a primal, pure strength.

Hmong people grow up listening to myths and singing ancient songs. These myths and songs are essential avenues for acquiring knowledge and understanding the world. The Hmong Song Poetry is considered an encyclopedic representation of ancient Hmong society. It not only compiles the essence of ancient Hmong mythology but also serves as an epic created by the Hmong ancestors through centuries of labor. Its content is all-encompassing, covering the origins of the universe, the birth of humans and other species, the creation of heaven and earth, the ancient times of chaos, the great migrations of the Hmong people, and the daily life, material production, and ancient social structures of the Hmong.

In addition to recording the ancestors' understanding of the world through ancient songs, Hmong culture also emphasizes the living transmission of knowledge, which gave rise to the role of the "master," with the Spirit Master being one of the most important figures. The Spirit Master is a crucial intermediary between the Hmong people and their gods, playing an essential role in the preservation and continuation of Hmong culture. In Hmong religious practices, the Spirit Master is regarded as someone who can communicate with spirits. Their role is to help Hmong people drive away malevolent spirits and bring in benevolent ones (good fortune) during significant events such as weddings, births, deaths, and festivals.

The role of the Spirit Master has its roots in ancient Hmong shamanistic culture. The continuation of this role to the present day demonstrates its vital significance in Hmong studies. The Spirit Master is not only a messenger between the people and the divine but also a profound observer, preserver, and practitioner of Hmong religious culture.

Through the performance of spirit rituals, the Spirit Master integrates the rich cultural beliefs of the Hmong into all aspects of social life. In doing so, religion ceases to be a distant concept, floating like clouds in the sky, and instead becomes an integral part of the daily lives of the Hmong people. These rituals and beliefs, despite their mysterious and fantastical content, have demonstrated tangible influence and meaning in the real world. It is the presence of the Spirit Master that solidifies and strengthens the Hmong belief system, making it more stable and enduring.
